John Berry

CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER

You could say my interest in finances and investing comes from my Mom. While I was growing up in Plainview, Mom worked at a local investment office. I thought I wanted to be one of those advisors.

Of course the industry has changed a lot over my 25-plus year career. After graduating from Texas A&M University, I worked at a couple of investment companies as a supervisor.

Like many Texans, though, my desire for independence is strong. In the mid 2000s, I had the chance to move onto my family homestead in Jack County AND launch Corner Post Financial Planning around the same time.

Fortunately, the financial services industry continues to move away from a product focus to a focus on advisory relationships and putting clients first. I am passionate about providing financial education both to our clients and to the next generations, whether that’s your children and grandchildren or the kids at a “career day” talk I give.

Here at Corner Post, my focus is helping clients with retirement planning and plan monitoring—from when retirement comes into view in your 40s and 50s to when you start thinking about what legacy you will leave to your heirs. My clients have worked diligently for what they’ve saved over many years, and together we develop strategies to help them pursue the array of goals they have on the road to and during retirement.

On the personal front, I am the proud husband of Melanie Berry and dad to Trey and Michael. Melanie is a teacher and homeschooled the boys through high school. Since we’re empty nesters—Trey attends West Texas A&M and Michael, The Citadel in South Carolina—she has joined the staff of Weatherford College as a tutor. We’re a multi-Jeep family and enjoy all things involving wide-open spaces.

If you ask me my favorite financial book, I would have to recommend The Richest Man in Babylon for its timelessness. Favorite non-financial book: Love Does, by Bob Goff. Musically, I enjoy hard rock from just about any generation, but my favorite band of all time is Rush.
